Martin Narey, chief executive of Barnardo’s, will be leaving the organisation in January 2011 after more than five years at the helm.

Narey is stepping down to spend more time at home and to pursue other interests, including writing on issues relating to poverty and disadvantage.

The Barnardo’s Council will immediately begin the process of recruiting his successor.

Narey said: “It has been a great privilege to lead an organisation in which everyone, both staff and volunteers, is passionate about helping the most vulnerable children transform their lives. My decision to leave in what will be my sixth year has not been taken lightly.

“But before my departure I am determined to steer Barnardo’s through what will be a challenging 2010. I want to ensure our work with children continues to grow in size and effectiveness and that we continue to speak out in defence of the most disadvantaged.”
