Marks & Spencer customers and employees raised over £2m for Macmillan Cancer Support in 2015 - a record for the corporate partnership between the two organisations.

According to a statement from the charity released today over £1.6m of the total figure was raised by M&S customers and employees during the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning, which the retailer has supported as a headline partner since 2009.

The remaining £400,000 was raised through a range of “employee fundraising, promotions and events” including a fundraising ball. Proceeds from the sale of plastic bags at M&S also go to Macmillan.

The £2m figure raised is a record high for the partnership which is now in its seventh year and is nearly £700,000 more than M&S raised for Macmillan in 2014.

Steve Kemp, head of food retail at M&S, said: “£2 million is an absolutely fantastic amount to have raised, and we are proud to support the incredible work Macmillan does. More than one in three of us will get cancer in our lifetime and it’s the toughest fight most of us will ever face. It is a vital issue, and that’s why our partnership with Macmillan is so important.”

Claire Singlehurst, director of high value fundraising at Macmillan, said: “We are delighted that M&S has raised £2m for Macmillan in 2015. This is a remarkable achievement and I would like to personally thank all of the generous M&S colleagues and customers who made this possible.”
