Macmillan holds onto top spot in charity mid-year ranking

26 Jul 2016 News

Macmillan Cancer Support has come top of the mid-year rankings for YouGov’s charity brand index, which measures public perception of individual organisations, but charities across the board have seen their score drop.

YouGov asks a representative sample of the public if they have heard anything - positive or negative - about individual organisations, to produce a ‘buzz’ score. Macmillan has consistently topped the league table, this time with a score of 13. This is slightly down on its annual score for 2015, which was 13.7.

Cancer Research UK came second and saw its score increase from 9.4 in 2015 to 11 for the first half of 2016.

The top five is mostly unchanged, except for RNLI dropping to sixth place and Dogs Trust moving into fourth.

The top ten are:

  1. Macmillan Cancer Support – 13.0
  2. Cancer Research UK – 11.0
  3. Help for Heroes – 5.6
  4. Dogs Trust – 5.5
  5. British Heart Foundation – 5.4
  6. RNLI – 5.1
  7. Guide Dogs – 4.8
  8. Marie Curie – 4.6
  9. National Trust – 4.6
  10. Alzheimer’s Society – 4.6

Fall in buzz scores

Since YouGov stared releasing the figures the scores have fallen over time. When YouGov first published figures in January 2014 Macmillan’s score was 19.7.

The average score for those in the top five in 2013 was 10.6 but for the mid-year rankings in 2016 it is 8.1.
