Lord Adebowale will leave Turning Point to become chair of the NHS Confederation and is being replaced by the charity's group managing director.

He has been chief executive at the social care charity for nearly 20 years and is also the chair of Social Enterprise UK.

Adebowale will leave at the end of March, when Julie Bass, who has been an executive board director at Turning Point since 2009 and who currently holds the position of group managing director, will assume the chief executive role.

He said: “Turning Point has been such an important part of my life. I leave optimistic about its future and knowing that the organisation’s best years are ahead.

“After nearly 20 years in the role, I’ve seen Turning Point grow to support over 100,000 people in the last year alone and to employ around 4,320 people. Turnover has also grown from £20m to £131m during that time.

“I’ve seen the transformation in delivery and quality of our services. Turning Point has never lost sight of the people it supports and they remain the heart of the organisation, driving it towards an even brighter future.

“It’s been such a privilege to work with a brilliant team across all our services, and be involved in the leadership of an organisation that I’m proud of every day. I’ll forever remain a supporter of team Turning Point and the people they serve."

Peter Hay, chair of Turning Point, added: “The board wants to thank Victor for his unstinting commitment to Turning Point and the people they support. We hope he will continue to be an advocate for the people we serve.

“Victor is one of the most dynamic figures in health and social care today. He’s led the way in defending the rights of the many people affected by gaping health inequalities that are still prevalent in society.

“He leaves Turning Point as we’re going from strength to strength.”

Before joining Turning Point, Bass worked in financial services in the UK and overseas in a wide variety of roles focusing on risk management, leadership development, cultural change and strategy.

Turning Point said “a thorough process based on skills, capability and experience was undertaken before Julie Bass was appointed by an interview process with the members of the board”. The charity has removed the role of group managing director.
