Charities Aid Foundation has joined with the United Nations to set up a trust to help British citizens fundraise more effectively.

CAF, working alongside the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), is currently running a two-week campaign on the London Underground to encourage people to donate through tax-efficient means.

With the slogan “For refugees who have lost everything, a little goes a long way”, CAF hopes to promote the UN’s global protection and assistance mission through the text-to-donate service.

Commenting on the campaign, Mike Packham from CAF said: “This is a great example of how CAF can enable fundraising and help a global agency to drive donations from the generous UK public to refugee projects across the globe, all the while ensuring that these donations are boosted through tax-effective means wherever possible.”

Around two-thirds of the funds raised will be used to provide legal protection for refugees around the world and deliver housing, clean water supplies, better sanitation, and to widen access to health and education. The remainder will be used to help refugees reintegrate with their countries of origin and to meet the needs for stateless people.

Regarding the partnership, Peter Kessler, UNHCR’s spokesman in London, said: “UNHCR is pleased to work with CAF in reaching out to donors in the UK.”

The campaign, which ends on January 31, will help to raise part of UNHCR’s global fundraising target of £1.85bn for 2010.

With 97 per cent of funding coming directly from voluntary contributions, the UNHCR will continue to help more than 25 million refugees, asylum-seekers, stateless and internally displaced persons in more than 118 countries worldwide.
