Action for Children is going local with the launch of a new microsite which will allow supporters to identify and support small, individual projects in their local area.

Functioning not unlike online restaurant directories, users of my.actionforchildren.org.uk, which launched today, will be able to type in their postcode to find projects in their local area – each one featuring a description and information about precisely how far away the project is from the supporter.

The site allows for donations from £2 to be restricted to specific projects ranging from funding school coaches to health awareness barbeques. Action for Children intend for the site, which took three months to build, to be a permanent donation facility.

While the charity hopes the site will engage a wide range of locally-engaged supporters, it said that the facility would be a natural fit for baby boomer supporters and net-savvy younger donors.

Action for Children will promote the new site initially with some press campaign work and has secured celebrities to back it, including Duncan Bannatyne, Dame Judi Dench and, more curiously, Vanilla Ice.

The site was developed by Open Fundraising.
