The Labour Party has invited a range of sector bodies to contribute to its civil society policy review.
In a letter to the likes of NCVO and Acevo, the leader of the opposition Ed Miliband (pictured) said the party would be asking a number of experts to join the review and will be organising monthly roundtable sessions for the sector to submit ideas.
The review will consider how a Labour government could help strengthen civil society and how it could provide the resources for social finance required over the next ten years.
Miliband writes that he is “deeply concerned” by the government’s “reckless cuts”. He adds: “I believe that civil society works best in partnership with government. Although Labour has a proud record in this respect, I have also been clear that sometimes we lost sight of people as individuals and communities.
“We need to refresh our thinking on how we build a stronger civil society to counter-balance the forces of an overbearing market and, at times, an overly bureaucratic state.”
The letter states that shadow minister for the Cabinet Office Tessa Jowell will give organisations further details “shortly”.
In December the party revealed that Hazel Blears would head a back-bench committee which would contribute ideas to the review.
