JustGiving users who arrived at the site from WhatsApp have donated £1.175m since the giving platform added the ability to share pages via the messaging app in April.

JustGiving users who arrived at the site from WhatsApp have donated £1.175m since the giving platform added the feature to share pages via the messaging app in April.

Writing on the JustGiving Tech Blog, Jonathan Waddingham, social product manager at JustGiving, revealed that £975,000 was raised through the app last year, and that a further £200,000 was raised in January 2016.

Earlier this week it was announced that WhatsApp now has one billion users.

Waddingham added that £4m was raised via Twitter. Facebook is still well ahead of other channels and raised £100m in 2015.

Some 46 per cent of the platform’s traffic came from Facebook and of that 80 per cent came via mobile devices.

Waddingham said: “Do we have a prediction for how these numbers will change in 2016? Well, one month in and we can already see that sharing is continuing to grow. We have a bunch of tests in the pipeline for encouraging even more sharing, and we’ll expect WhatsApp to continue in popularity and start to replace Twitter as the second most important channel on mobile.”
