In September’s Charity Finance we meet the FDs of the largest 100 charities – who are they, where have they come from, and what do they think? It makes fascinating reading.

  • The average salary of an FD at one of the largest 100 charities is £96,000.
  • As a group they are increasingly undertaking more commercial activities, such as charged-for services, charity shops, social enterprise and collaboration with the private sector.
  • Only 22 per cent of those asked say their charity invests in social investment products, with 36 per cent not anticipating doing so in the forseeable future.
  • Of the 28 new FDs recruited in the last two years, only four per cent have a public sector background, compared with 15 per cent two years ago.

Also in September's issue:

We also take a look at the wider profession in our annual Finance Function Survey and find that:

  • once again staffing issues are playing on the mind more than anything else, with almost a fifth of charity FDs expecting to cut staff in the next 12 month
  • demographically there’s been little change - over 60 per cent of charity FDs are men, over 70 per cent are aged 45 or over, and over 90 per cent are white
  • across the whole sector, the average salary is now £45,080, rising to £72,900 in some of the larger charities
  • the average stay of a charity FD is almost six years.

And finally...

A reminder that the early-bird prices for our Charity Finance Summit close on 7 September. Until then it’s less than £100 per person for a team of four. The day includes conferences on investment, property and tax, with 28 advice hotspots hosted by leading suppliers to the profession. More details on all that here.
