In September’s issue of Governance, Mike Hudson (director of Compass Partnership and visiting fellow at Cass Centre for Charity Effectiveness) gives us a handy snapshot of the 50 essential governance characteristics of these charities, such as:

  • on average these charity have 14 trustees on their boards
  • only 10 per cent remunerated any board members (excluding the chair), and 14 per cent remunerated their chair
  • nearly three-quarters had dealt with a conflict of interest in the last 12 months
  • 61 per cent of chairs and chief executives spoke weekly.
