With an annual income of £27bn the largest 500 charities account for almost half the entire sector. So how they decide to govern themselves can set the tone.

In September’s issue of Governance, Mike Hudson (director of Compass Partnership and visiting fellow at Cass Centre for Charity Effectiveness) gives us a handy snapshot of the 50 essential governance characteristics of these charities, such as:

• on average these charity have 14 trustees on their boards
• only 10 per cent remunerated any board members (excluding the chair), and 14 per cent remunerated their chair
• nearly three-quarters had dealt with a conflict of interest in the last 12 months
• 61 per cent of chairs and chief executives spoke weekly.
