Plans to create specialist housing exclusively for ex-servicemen have been given a £660,000 government funding boost.

Forces Self Build Apartments is the first project of its kind in the United Kingdom and aims to provide support to former servicemen who have fallen to alcohol or drug addiction.

The apartments are to be built in West Street, Bedminster, and will also provide former soldiers with the opportunity to build their own homes and gain practical experience in construction.

The investment from the Homes and Communities Agency means the ambitious project of 14 two-bedroom flats can begin in March.

The scheme is to be lead jointly by Knightstone Housing Association and housing charity Community Self Build Agency.
