Help for Heroes has expressed its “deep sadness” about the murder of a soldier in south London who was widely reported to be wearing one of the charity’s branded T-shirts at the time.
At approximately 2:30pm yesterday, two men attacked the as-yet unnamed soldier with a number of weapons, including a meat cleaver, near an army barracks in Woolwich, and were later shot and apprehended by armed police.
The armed services charity has released the following statement: “Help for Heroes is appalled to hear that a man, believed to be a serving soldier, has been brutally murdered in Woolwich.
“We are desperately saddened to hear of this sickening attack and offer our thoughts and prayers to his family, colleagues and friends.”
Robert Halfon, MP for Harlow & the Villages, tweeted last night encouraging people to react to the incident by donating to Help for Heroes.

The incident was captured on video by bystanders at the killers’ request, and has since been broadcast on national news channels.
