In just two years the Guardian newspaper has become one of the largest fundraising entities in the UK, with more than 300,000 supporters contributing “several million pounds” a year.
The newspaper launched an appeal for donations at the bottom of every page in mid-2016, and has seen it raise a significant amount of income, although it has not specified the exact amount.
The paper filed its annual report and accounts at the end of last month, in which is showed considerably increased supporter income. It said it had 570,000 regular supporters, which include subscribers as well as donors, and an additional 300,000 one-off contributors.
The figure may be enough to put the company in the hundred largest fundraising entities in the UK.
The 100th largest fundraising charity is the Science Museum Group, with an income of just over £8m, but there are several non-charities with significant fundraising income. In particular, many UK universities raise significant sums, with 110 institutions attracting just over £1bn in funds.
