The Guardian and Observer Charity Appeal 2015 has reached over £1.2m, and is on course to break the newspapers' fundraising record.

The appeal, which passed the £1.2m mark late on Wednesday evening, had at that point received over 11,000 donations. The paper said it was currently on course on break its current fundraising record which was set in 2014 following the Boxing Day Tsunami, when it raised £1.47m.

The We Stand Together appeal is raising money for six charities supporting refugees across the world. The charities are: the Red Cross, Migrant Offshore Aid Station (Moas), Doctors of the World, Refugee Council, City of Sanctuary, and Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Katharine Viner, editor-in-chief, said of the choice of appeal: "We have chosen refugees as our theme this year not just to raise money for a vital humanitarian cause but as an act of solidarity. Our appeal slogan is We Stand Together: a stand against intolerance, and fear; a stand for empathy and generosity."

She further explained why the charities had been chosen here.
