An appeal by The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) for people affected by the Gaza conflict raised £14m in the first month.

DEC’s Gaza Crisis Appeal was aired by all major UK broadcasters on 8th August, a month into the Israel-Palestine conflict and during the first of a series of ceasefires.

Saleh Saeed, chief executive of DEC, said: “Raising money to help those affected by conflict is always challenging but for a family which has lost its home, their need is as great whether the cause is an earthquake or a war.

“Despite significant risks and obstacles our member agencies and their partners have done an amazing job delivering aid to hundreds of thousands of people whose lives have been torn apart.”

Hundreds of thousands of people were driven from their homes during the conflict, creating an urgent need for essentials such as clean water, food, household items, emergency shelter and medical supplies, according to DEC.

The funds raised reached 1.1m people with the help of DEC's member agencies which include Action Aid, Age International, British Red Cross partner the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, Care International, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Save the Children, World Vision and the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (Cafod).

DEC will continue to fund its members for the next two years.

“As an uneasy peace holds and the dust settles there is now an enormous amount of work to be done supporting people to rebuild their lives,” said Saeed. “The DEC will continue funding its members for the next two years as they set about this work in Gaza."

The Gaza appeal was much less successful than DEC's Typhoon Haiyan appeal, earlier this year, which raised £13m in the first day alone and £90m in three months.
