Fundraising Regulator opens registration for charities in Northern Ireland

01 Mar 2018 News

The Fundraising Regulator has today announced it has opened its registration scheme up to charities with an annual fundraising spend below £100,000 based in Northern Ireland.

The regulator’s register currently has over 3,000 fundraising charities signed up across the England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Irish charities with an annual fundraising spend below £100,000 will now able to register with an annual £50 payment from today.

The Fundraising Regulator also said there are currently 24 charities in Northern Ireland which spend over £100,000 a year on fundraising. The regulator said it had written to these organisations asking for them to contribute to its fundraising levy.

Charities have 30 days to respond to the request for levy contributions.

'Support regulation across the sector,' says Rader

Walter Rader, the Fundraising Regulator’s board member for Northern Ireland, has called on smaller fundraising charities in the country to register and help “support regulation across the sector”.

“Registration with the Fundraising Regulator is a great opportunity for charities and third parties in Northern Ireland to not only support regulation across the sector, but also to show their supporters that they are committed to honouring and protecting the standards set out in the Code of Fundraising Practice.”

Seamus McAleavey, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action, said his organisation will register and “continue to work closely with the Fundraising Regulator”.

“NICVA is pleased to be working with the Fundraising Regulator to promote good fundraising practice in Northern Ireland. We welcome the opportunity for charities in NI to register with the Fundraising Regulator. NICVA will itself register and will continue to work closely with the Fundraising Regulator and others to support and encourage best practice in fundraising here.”

The Fundraising Regulator begun overseeing and regulating fundraising practices in Northern Ireland in June 2017.
