The chief executive of the Fundraising Regulator has confirmed that it has received over 150 complaints from members of the public since it officially launched in July.

Stephen Dunmore, interim chief executive of the Fundraising Regulator, said that the new regulator had received more than 150 complaints about charitable fundraising from members of the public in its first two months of operations.

Dunmore also said that the regulator was “well advanced” in its first major investigation into the allegations which appeared in the Sun around the now defunct fundraising agency Neet Feet.

A spokesman would not speculate as to when the investigation would be published.

“The Fundraising Regulator is now up and running,” said Dunmore. “In the first two months, we have received more than 150 complaints from the public, and we are well advanced with a major investigation into the Sun’s allegations about Neet Feet, a fundraising agency.”

He also explained the “three key priorities” for the Fundraising Regulator over the next few months. The first being to “develop and publish clear guidance on data protection and consent issues, building on the report of the NCVO’s working group on how to secure donor’s consent” which Civil Society News understands will published at the end of the month.

The second being to “prepare for thorough review of the Code of Fundraising Practice in the new year,” and the third being to “roll out the levy to ensure that we can meet our operating costs”.

Pertaining to the levy, Dunmore said that “letters will shortly go out to the approximately 2,000 charities and fundraising agencies eligible to pay the levy”. He also said that, at the same time as the letter goes out, the regulator will “publish our business plan and budget on our website”.

He concluded by saying: “It is now for the charitable sector to demonstrate its commitment to voluntary regulation, working with the Fundraising Regulator to ensure that all future fundraising is respectful, open, honest and accountable to the public.”
