A software developer has built a web app to help participants in the Maggie’s Monster Bike and Hike 2012 motivate teammates and fundraise.

Peter Aitken works at application development company EdgeCase which gives employees a certain amount of time to work on their own projects.

He said that he developed Go Team Go because: “I had taken part in the 2011 challenge with a team of five friends, and discovered that there was no easy way to track progress and easily motivate our team.”

Once users have signed up to Go Team Go they can link it to their JustGiving and social networking pages to share their training progress.

Aitken added that: “No one likes asking for sponsorship money but by sharing progress and involving those who are not actually taking part, you make them feel part of the team. This makes it easier to collect money.”

The app will send email reminders to individuals about heir training schedule. Team members will also be able to see if one of their team needs some extra motivation for training and step in and help earlier.

A web app (or application) differs from a website because the content for each user’s page changes depending on information and targets individuals enter into it. The app will also be accessible from smartphones.

Maggie’s Monster Bike and Hike is an annual 24-hour outdoor adventure challenge in the Scottish Highlands raising money for Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. The ninth event will take place on 5 and 6 May 2012. In 2011 more than 650 took part raising almost £500,000 from entry fees and sponsorship.
