More than £46,000 has been donated to the JustGiving page of a cyclist who was killed in car crash at the weekend while fundraising for Mind.
Christian Smith, 38, from Boughton Aulph in Kent, had been attempting to cycle 248 miles round Kent and Sussex in 24 hours to raise money for Mind, when he was involved in a collision with a Peugeot 206 at 4am on Saturday morning.
The 18-year old driver of the Peugeot was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and causing death by dangerous driving and bailed pending further investigation until the 26 July. Later a 19-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and bailed until 27 July.
On his JustGiving page Smith said: “I want to support the charity Mind, raise awareness towards the great support that they offer, and help bring an end to the stigma that is attached to those who suffer from mental health problems.”
So far 3,525 people have donated to his fundraising page, raising £46,820.67, with many leaving tributes and messages of support for his family and friends.
Smith had been aiming to raise £1,000 for Mind, and had promised to cycle naked around Wye if successful.
Paul Farmer, chief executive of Mind, said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Christian Smith. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.
“Mind is grateful for the continued dedication of all our fundraisers, without whom we would not be able to support the hundreds of thousands of people affected by mental health problems across England and Wales.”
