Diabetes UK believes it is the first charity to offer its membership content by text message in return for a monthly £3 donation.

Diabetes UK believes it is the first charity to offer its membership content by text message in return for a monthly £3 donation.

People can sign up to receive information that is tailored to their type of diabetes by text message. They will also be able to view copies of the charities magazine a support guides via a publications app instead of receiving printed copies.

The publications app is compatible with Apple, Android and Amazon Fire devices.

Svetlana Kirov, interim director of fundraising, said: “We are delighted to launch the first ever charity mobile membership. This ground-breaking new service makes it really easy for people to become members, receiving all the benefits this brings as well as helping us to fund essential services and pioneering research to improve the lives of everyone affected by diabetes.”

People can sign up to the service by entering their mobile number to an online form, indicating which type of diabetes they have or if they are a parent of child with diabetes, and will then have £3 added to their mobile phone bill each month.

Kirov added: ““With people using their mobiles across a wide range of activities it was really important to us that we adapted our membership so that this too is accessible to people via a mobile platform.

“As well as helping us to fund our work supporting people with diabetes, the new service will empower people living with diabetes to gain better control over their condition, and ultimately their lives, with the essential diabetes information they need at their fingertips.”

Diabetes UK’s mobile membership service was developed in partnership with Open Fundraising and uses its mobilise platform.
