The Disasters Emergency Committee has raised £5m for the emergency relief effort in Pakistan as the country continues to suffer from flooding and monsoons.
DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley said the money has poured in over the weekend, but urged the public to continue giving. “We need the money to keep coming because the flood waters are still spreading and the DEC is helping to fund an ever increasing aid effort,” he said.
While a significant amount of money, the pace of giving to the Pakistani appeal is significantly slower than the DEC appeal for the Haiti earthquake in January this year. The total after the first weekend of fundraising for the Haiti appeal was more than four times that of the Pakistan campaign, coming in at £23m on 18 January five days after it launched its appeal.
The DEC launched its Pakistan Floods appeal last Wednesday, 4 August.
