The Disasters Emergency Committee has raised £13m for its Philippines Typhoon appeal less than 24 hours after its first advertisements hit television screens.
The funds have poured in since the fundraising organisation, which comprises 14 member agencies, announced its appeal yesterday morning. The DEC said the rate of donations is “unprecedented” in its appeal history.
Donations have been buoyed by matched funding announced yesterday evening by the Department for International Development, which will pound-for-pound match donations up to a total value of £5m. The £13m raised does not include this government match funding. The Big Give also launched its own match fund, which has now raised more than £200,000 for various Philippines appeals, nearly half of which has been donated to the DEC fund.
DEC chief executive Saleh Saeed praised the UK government for its speedy response to the disaster which, with the £5m in match funding, will total £15m.
“It has already provided funding through DFID for emergency relief and critical logistical support through the armed forces. Now the UK government is taking an important further step by pledging to match the first £5m raised by the Disaster Emergency Committee through our public appeal,” said Saeed. “This is a strong commitment which we believe will encourage the public to give even more generously.”
By 3pm yesterday, well before television and radio broadcasts went live, DEC had already raised £1.5m, which it attributed to social media driving donations – particularly via Facebook and Twitter.
Stories from the devastated archipelago dominated television news last night, and this morning Britons woke to news of people being crushed to death in stampedes for aid relief.
