The Disasters Emergency Committee has now raised over £13m for people facing hunger and displacement in Yemen.

The DEC launched its emergency appeal for Yemen on 13 December and, according to the last update it gave on the appeal on 23 December, it has now raised over £13m for those left displaced and starving by the region's ongoing civil war.

The DEC said that, alongside the money raised through donations from the public, the UK government has committed to contribute “more than £4.5m through Aid Match”, while other partners including Comic Relief, British Airways and the Scottish government have “also made significant donations”.

Saleh Saeed, chief executive of the DEC, said: “We would like to thank the UK public for so generously donated to our Yemen Crisis Appeal, helping us raise more than £13m.

“Half of Yemen’s population is going hungry and children are starving to death as we speak. With the funds raised, we will be able to provide emergency drip feeding for those on the brink of starvation, nutritious peanut paste for malnourished children and cash vouchers for families unable to afford food and medicine.

“The crisis in Yemen may be far from over but, despite the conflict, DEC member charities are already reaching millions of people across the country with lifesaving aid, and, with extra funds, they can reach many more.”

DEC member charities, including the Red Cross, CARE International, Islamic Relief, Oxfam and Save the Children, are already working across the country. Christian Aid and Tearfund are supporting activities of partner charities responding to the crisis.

Donations can be made online, by calling 0370 60 60 900, at high street banks and post offices, or by texting SUPPORT to 70000 to give £5.
