Complaints to the Fundrasing Regulator have “gone through the roof” in January, according to the organisations’ head of policy and communications, Gerald Oppenheim.

Oppenheim told a seminar on charity policy today that the regulator had received around 500 complaints since it had been established, but that there had been a spike in January, for reasons the regulator did not understand.

"Since 7 July last year we’ve had around 500 complaints from members of the public," he told delegates at the seminar in London organised by the Westminster Policy Forum.

"Up to Christmas that was running at around 70 a month, but in January it’s gone through the roof.

“We don’t know why. It’s not just pre-Christmas charity fundraising campaign. We can’t discern any trend."

Oppenheim said it was obvious that there was still plenty of public concern about how charities fundraise. He said that at any one time the regulator has around 15 to 20 cases under investigation.

Oppenheim also said that the regulator would publish new guidance on data protection on 21 February – the same day it will hold a joint conference on the subject with the Charity Commission and Information Commissioner’s Office.
