Graham Wilmington will replace David Tyler as chief executive, and a number of roles will be consolidated at Community Matters following the failed merger attempt with Navca.

Tyler, welcoming the restructure, told civilsociety.co.uk it is likely Wilmington will take the CEO position in the next two weeks.

“I wish him all the success in the world," Tyler said of Wilmington. "I think this is very well-deserved and it needs his fresh approach. At this point I have been in post 13 years and that’s a good amount of time, I’m very pleased with what I’ve done but it needs somebody like Graham to step up to the role now I think.”

Tyler (pictured, left) said the reorganisation, undertaken by Wilmington, was a necessity: "The organisation needs to reorganise quite substantially to be able to carry on," he said.

"The income for next year will be smaller than it is for this year and I’m actually quite excited by the reorganisation, I think it’s going to make us one of the most efficient and cost-effective organisations in the sector. But what was clear to me early on was they wouldn’t need was me in my current capacity and with the current level of costs to be able to do that.

“I had in any case been thinking for some time about a move because there are other things I want to do in the sector and elsewhere, so this just precipitated that move really.”

Tyler said that "the major part of my future is undecided", but he is currently involved in a "couple of other projects".

Staff roles consolidated

Other members of staff too face redundancy, with what was a skeleton staff of nine (with most of the body's services out-sourced to associates) reducing to just three core staff.

Wimington explained: “We will have three core staff, these will be the CEO, the director of operations and the head of member services and communications. We will have someone on contract to help us on the finance and book-keeping side and we have our associates who will be working with us on delivering all our services."

He advised that the current head of consultancy and training will combine with the director of operations under the title director of operations.

Community Matters was all set to merge with fellow umbrella body Navca when the merger was cancelled due to pension liabilities earlier this week. More on the merger cancellation can be found here. And further information relating to the underlying pension liabilities issues can be found here.
