Commission appoints interim manager to military charity criticised over fundraising

The Charity Commission has appointed an interim manager to Support the Heroes, which was featured in a BBC Scotland documentary highlighting poor fundraising practices.

Brian Johnson of HW Fisher & Company became the interim manager on 9 December 2016. Support the Heroes has filed an appeal against the appointment with the Charity Tribunal.

The charity was one of a number featured in a BBC Scotland expose in November, and the commission subsequently opened a statutory inquiry. It also froze the charity’s assets and ordered it to stop fundraising.

Concerns have been reported to the commission about its fundraising practices, and the regulator said: “The commission has serious concerns about an agreement that the charity has entered with a commercial fundraising company. It is particularly concerned about the transparency of the charity’s fundraising arrangements and the ability of the public to make an informed decision about donating to the charity."

Support the Heroes had a contract with a firm owned by Tony Chadwick. The charity received £191,000 and paid more than £60,000 to Chadwick’s company, Targeted Management.

The regulator is also looking at other governance issues and liaising with the Fundraising Regulator.
