Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research has developed a free extension for the open source CRM software it uses, to enable other charities to claim gift aid online.
Ahead of HMRC’s launch of Charities Online on 22 April, the blood cancer charity developed the extension for the CiviCRM system platform it uses and because the system is free, other charities that use it will be able to download the extension.
Thomas Muirhead, head of digital and CRM at Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research said: “The work we’ve done is immediately available to all charities using CiviCRM and available free of charge. Why should all charities have to pay for the same work to be done over and over again?”
“The speed and flexibility that open source technology offers is fantastic and perfectly fits our culture here at Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. We want to share our development because we’re keen to have a wider social impact as an organisation.”
Veda Consulting carried out the work for the charity. CiviCRM is a web-based, open source CRM software aimed at the non-profit sector.
The move to online filing for gift aid was announced in last year's budget, with further details announced at the end of last year and in March 2013.
From 22 April there charities will be able to claim gift aid online. Those which do not have internet access can submit their claims by paper forms, but these will differ from present system and the HMRC advised will take longer to process.
