Charity interest in night-time cycling event spikes

Charities have shown increased interest in Nightrider this year, with 25 per cent more organisations buying pre-sale places at the 100km night-time fundraising ride through London.

Charities have shown increased interest in Nightrider this year, with 25 per cent more organisations buying pre-sale places at the 100km night-time fundraising ride through London.

While Nightrider 2014 has not yet launched to the wider charity market, some 1,470 places have been pre-sold to last year’s participating charities, an increase of one quarter.

Other charities will be able to buy places on 11 September, and 4,000 places will go on sale to members of the public in October.

The Nightrider organisers have credited the spike in interest from charities to a general increase in cycling enthusiasm across the UK. Earlier this month 16,000 cyclists took part in the first Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, a 100-mile fundraising event, with 50,000 individuals applying for the ballot for 2014 race within 24 hours of the ballot opening.

Sir Eric Reich, managing director of Classic Tours which operates Nightrider, said: “We expect Nightrider to be a sell-out given the strong interest from charities so far in the surge in cycling since the Olympics and Tour de France success.”

Charities pay £60 for places in the event.
