Umbrella body Care England is offering charities the opportunity to combine energy volumes in a bulk tender that could save them money on their energy bills over the next three years.

Its first round of the project saw 53 charities and six community interest companies, which accounted for a tenth of all organisations, take part and save up to 36% compared to incumbent brokers gas and electricity prices.

Eligible organisations can register their interest in the tender, which is called the exclusive Care England bulk tender for gas and electricity renewals from 2023 to 2026.

Care England said it started the bulk tender as it was concerned about the rising cost of energy bills.

In its first round its prices were up to 27% lower than the same supplier book prices and around £3.8m in VAT and the Climate Change Levy (CCL) was recovered through the scheme, it told Civil Society.

“To keep renewal costs sustainable, accessing the best possible advice will again be key, and to maximise energy supplier interest and offers are keenly priced whilst minimising excessive risk premiums”, it said.

The charity said it saw credit rejections re-examined due to charities involvement in the bulk tender and that it gave organisations access to platforms and products that were not accessible to all brokers, meaning they could get the lowest possible quotes.
