The Charities Aid Foundation has said it hopes to sign up over 1,000 charity partners for this year’s #GivingTuesday, as Morrisons becomes the first supermarket to sign up.

A CAF spokeswoman told Civil Society News that it currently has 952 partners signed up for the #GivingTuesday, 141 more than the total amount who signed up in 2014 and over 700 more than at this time last year.

The spokeswoman said CAF are “hoping to make a ‘1,000 partners’ announcement in the next week or so”.

#GivingTuesday is an international ‘day of giving’ which takes place on 1 December this year, following on from Black Friday and Cyber Monday – two of the biggest days for shopping in the United Kingdom.

Last year’s event saw a sharp rise in online donations. Visa Europe said that more than £2,500 was donated every minute on Visa cards in Britain – a 10 per cent increase on the previous year.

It is a global campaign, led by CAF in the UK. It originated in the United States and ran for the first time in the UK last year.

Morrisons, is the first supermarket chain to sign up as a partner for the 2015 #GivingTuesday. The supermarket has had a partnership with care charity Sue Ryder since February 2014, and has so far raised over £3m for the charity.

Kim Roberts, campaign lead on #GivingTuesday said: "We are way ahead of where we were this time last year. In 2014 hundreds of charities and businesses signed up at the last minute. We are building on last year's success so #GivingTuesday will be even bigger and better in 2015."

David Scott, head of corporate affairs at Morrisons said: “It provides a fantastic opportunity to highlight the work Sue Ryder does but also offers a chance for our staff and customers to come together to celebrate giving for a day”.
