Breakthrough Breast Cancer has expanded Kath Abrahams' remit to oversee communications, advocacy and campaigns in the new role of director of engagement and income generation formed as part of an ongoing structural review.

Abrahams joined the charity in 2011 as director of fundraising, and retains fundraising responsibility while taking the new position with immediate effect.

The charity’s last director of communications, David Barker, left earlier this year to become CEO at Crohn’s and Colitis UK.

Abrahams said: “We’re looking to deliver a step-change in the growth of our sustainable income, engaging and inspiring new and existing supporters as we seek to achieve even more for all those affected by breast cancer. We will be able to take a much more co-ordinated approach to engaging support now that we’re working together as a single team, which I know will give us the best possible opportunity to succeed.”

The charity’s income for the financial year 2010/11 (latest available) was £18.1m, with 70 per cent coming from voluntary sources. This is slightly up on the previous year but down from 2007 and 2008 when its income exceeded £20m.

As part of the management restructure the charity will also recruit a director of research, policy and information to oversee the charity’s research management, policy and public health teams.
