Bidders wishing to run the Do-it volunteering website now have until 8 July to submit their applications.
YouthNet announced in March that it was to relinquish the site, which it said had grown to stray too far outside its mission to encourage young volunteers. Do-it was launched in 2001 and has grown into the most diverse volunteering database in the UK, with over one million volunteering opportunities.
Supported by the Cabinet Office and the Big Lottery Fund, the site is now out for tender, with bids invited from yesterday. The Office for Civil Society, under the Cabinet Office, will provide transitional grant funding of an unspecified amount to the successful candidate.
Minister for civil society Nick Hurd said: "Do-it is an important asset for the voluntary sector. We want to make sure that it not only continues, but seizes the many opportunities that digital technology, social media and open data create for the sector. We look forward to receiving some innovative proposals."
Bidders will have to show how they will ensure the continuation of the service and utilise new technologies and common standards as well as develop the system to increase the availability of diverse opportunities to give time.
