John Lewis has said it hopes to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for Age UK with its Christmas advert, which was unveiled this morning.

This year’s advert tells the story a young girl who reaches to the Man in the Moon, raising awareness of older people who face spending Christmas alone. The advert is set to Half the World Away, written by Oasis and sung by Norwegian singer Aurora.

John Lewis is selling a mug and a card that are inspired by the advert, which will donate 25 per cent plus the VAT to Age UK. It is also encouraging people to text Moon to 70800 to donate £5 and directing people to the charity’s online donation page.

Last year John Lewis partnered with WWF during its Christmas campaign, which featured a penguin, and the charity saw a 250 per cent increase in penguin adoptions as a result.
