A charity that has been providing relationship support for over six decades has announced that it will close due to “financial challenges and a lack of sustainable funding”.
Yesterday, Relate Nottinghamshire, which was established in 1964, said it would shut its doors on 15 July.
In a statement, the charity said: “Despite the dedication of our team and the life-changing impact of our services, ongoing financial challenges and a lack of sustainable funding have made it impossible to continue.
“Sadly, our closure reflects a wider reality, many charities today are facing unprecedented difficulties in securing the resources they need to survive and continue their vital work.”
Relate Nottinghamshire is part of the Relate Federation, which is made up of the national charity, 23 independent local charities and associated organisations in Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man.
In January, the national charity, founded in 1938 as the National Marriage Guidance Council, was bought out of administration by Family Action.
‘Not a decision any of us wanted to make’
Donna Corah, chief executive of Relate Nottinghamshire, said the decision to close the charity was not one “any of us wanted to make”.
“Like many small charities, we’ve grappled with increasing financial pressures and a lack of sustainable, long-term funding,” she wrote in a statement.
“This unfortunately mirrors a wider challenge within the charity sector, where many vital organisations are struggling to survive.
“Despite the unwavering passion and commitment of our team and the many challenges we’ve overcome, we've reached a point where continuing is no longer feasible.”
Corah said the charity’s “immediate focus is on ensuring a smooth and respectful transition for our clients, staff and partners”.
