A £63m turnover organisation which encourages recycling in homes and the workplace has said it will apply for charitable status.

Wrap is currently a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee which promotes resource efficiency. It was set up in 2000, and is funded by a large number of government and public sector organisations.

A spokesman told civilsociety.co.uk: “Wrap is working to diversify its funding base as part of its corporate strategy to build on its unique selling point to bring different groups together and drive real change.

"The Wrap board has agreed we should pursue the option of Wrap converting to charitable status which would give us access to other sources of funding. That process is in its early stages."

Wrap would be the 108th largest charity in the UK, with an income greater than ActionAid, Unicef or Eton School.
