The Cabinet Office has announced a £2m grant from its £20m Social Action Fund to support a Community Games programme, designed by the Legacy Trust to help communities organise local sporting and cultural events in celebration of the Olympics.

The YMCA and County Sports Partnership Network will deliver the project, which will see an estimated 2,000 events take place across England. The programme will provide support and resource to local Community Games organisers who will be responsible for developing and implementing the events in their own communities.

£2m is the maximum grant allocated from the Social Action Fund.

Nick Hurd, minister for civil society said: "We want everyone to get involved and celebrate the London 2012 Games coming to the UK... Community Games will provide the help and support people need to organise a run, a triathlon or even a dance contest display in their local area this summer."

The Community Games programme is the brainchild of the Legacy Trust, which was set up to ensure the London Olympics provide wider and longer-lasting benefit to communities in the UK. The £20m Social Action Fund was set up to expand and expedite social action and is managed by the Social Investment Business.

16 other successful applicants, sharing £9m of the Social Action Fund were announced in February. They included Teach First, Catch 22 and Beatbullying.
