What’s in September’s issue of Governance & Leadership?

15 Jul 2026 In-depth

Civil Society Media

The cover theme in September’s G&L is new approaches to impact measurement and management, and we have three case studies: from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Onward Lives and Equality Now.

In People & Culture, a charity CEO used his doctoral research to investigate why volunteers leave charities, and suggests that focusing on volunteer retention is the wrong goal.

In Strategy & Operations, a tech expert lists his favourite AI tools for use in different charity functions.

There are three articles in the Board Matters section: a warning for trustees about the risks of outsourcing in the wake of the Beacon CRM cyber breach; an HR expert advising boards how to successfully navigate the departure of a senior leader (hint: not how Oxfam handled it!); and a promotional article for the Festival of Trusteeship in November about how boards need to be braver.

The Charity Commission advises a treasurer who is keen to get their whole board engaged with the charity’s finances, and in Core Functions – where the theme is Risk, the director of corporate services at Devon Air Ambulance writes that charities could achieve much more if they were to see risk differently, and embrace open discussions about it rather than being afraid of it.
