A new tool to allow development charities to network with other charities in the UK and abroad has been launched.
The tool, NGO Explorer, is a website that allows charities to search for UK-based development charities by their location in the UK or overseas.
It was co-created by professor Dan Brockington, University of Sheffield and Dr Nicola Banks, University of Manchester and the website was developed by David Kane, a freelance data scientist. It uses data from the Charity Commission.
Brockington said: “We hope the NGO explorer will be used as a spring-board for contacts, interactions and exchange. It fits into a broader ecosystem of networking activities and organisations, which provide new ways for international NGOs to collaborate and coordinate.”
Dr Nicola Banks added: “We know that the development sector acts quite differently from civil society as a whole, so it’s important we know more about it. With 90 per cent of development expenditure concentred amongst just 8 per cent of large organisations in the sector, we’re excited to help to connect smaller organisations.”
It was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Global Challenges Research Fund.
In the future, those behind the project hope to add Scottish and Irish development charities to the database.
