Some £15m has been awarded to 10 women’s charity groups, in the latest round of funding from the Tampon Tax Fund, DCMS has announced.
In a speech to parliament yesterday, minister for civil society, Mims Davies announced that the funding would be granted to organisations including UK Community Foundations (UKCF) and Homeless Link, and will be used to help women at risk of homelessness or slavery, among other issues.
UKCF received the largest proportion of funding, with £3.5m and Homeless Link received the second most, at £2m.
UKCF will distribute its funding through its network of 46 community foundations throughout the UK. These will in turn distribute the funding to grassroot groups. Director of programmes and development Vicki Papworth said: “It’s great to be working with government again to deliver this vital funding in communities across the country.”
In January, the UKCF said that the fund was oversubscribed, and that a quarter of applicants received grants in the first round of funding.
Papworth added that “demand is growing” and “worthy projects missed out” in the last round of funding.
The other recipients of the fund are Spirit of 2012, Gamcare, Crisis UK, SACRO, Southall Black Sisters, Changing Lives and Youth Access.
Comic Relief also received £1.3m.
Davies said that the funding will help vulnerable women of all ages and give them opportunities needed to rebuild their lives.
She said: “It is absolutely right we invest money from sanitary products in projects to give more women and girls the help and support they need to address difficult challenges they face in society.”
The Tampon Tax Community Fund was launched in 2015. It uses money raised through a levy on sanitary products.
