Philip Grant, new chair of trustees at The Brokerage

Our weekly summary of the latest movers in the charity sector.  


Chief executive

David Johnson has been appointed head of programme at Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy. Johnson is one of three new appointments announced by the organisation. 

Johnson joins from the Albany Theatre in Deptford, South London where he was previously head of development. A member of the Institute of Fundraising, Johnson was also previously head of business development at the Arts Centre Stockton.

He has already been involved with Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy as a voluntary regional fundraising coordinator for London. 


The chief executive of RNIB, Sally Harvey, has announced she has stepped down from her role with the charity, following news that both the Charity Commission and Ofsted had opened investigations into the charity regarding safeguarding concerns. 

Eleanor Southwood, chair of RNIB, announced Harvey’s departure in an open letter on the charity’s website last week. Harvey was made chief executive of RNIB in October 2017, having been the organisation’s acting chief executive since October 2016. 

Southwood has said the charity will appoint a new interim chief executive “as soon as possible”.

Fundraising and communications

Yorkshire-based homelessness charity Simon on the Streets has appointed Fiona Hobson as administrative, communications and volunteer coordinator and Fabian Irons as administrative and fundraising assistant. 

Hobson joins the charity having spent the last two years working overseas in China. She previously worked in the higher education sector but has significant charity volunteering experience. 

Irons joins the charity as part of Yorkshire’s Skills Training Employment Pathways return to work project. 


Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy have also appointed Lynsey Rowe on a 12-month secondment from her current position at the Arts Council England as head of strategic projects. 

Prior to working with Arts Council England, Rowe also worked for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and with Amnesty International. 


Non executive

Philip Grant has been appointed as the new chair of trustees at The Brokerage, a social mobility charity based in the City of London. 

Grant has been a trustee of the organisation since 2016. His working background is in insurance and Grant is also a liveryman and managing trustee of the Worshipful Company of Insurers. 

The Brokerage is a charity that connects young people with employers and the insurance and other financial sectors.


Paul Amadi is the final of three new appointments announced by Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy

Amadi, who is currently director of fundraising and engagement at the MS Society, has joined the organisation’s non-executive scrutiny committee. He has also been made a non-executive director of Arts Fundraising and Philanthropy’s lead partner Cause4. 

Amadi has previously been director of fundraising at both the NSPCC and Diabetes UK, and has also been chair of the Institute of Fundraising and the international Fundraising Congress. He is also a founding member of the Black Fundraisers’ Network.
