VSO has relaunched its door-to-door fundraising programme and aims to recruit 1,500 new supporters by next April.

The international development charity stopped door-to-door in 2017 after one of its agencies closed and another chose to work with other clients.

VSO is now working with REAL Fundraising and a small number of fundraisers to recruit new regular donors.

Activity began in early October. The charity had planned to start earlier in the year but had to delay the launch due to coronavirus.

A spokesperson from the charity told Civil Society News: “Acquisition of new donors at VSO had been effectively on pause since we stopped our door-to-door programme in 2016-7 and although we have launched some small campaigns on digital and print channels since then, we knew that we needed to get door-to-door up and running to recruit new supporters at scale.

“VSO needs unrestricted funds more than ever to help deliver our programmes across the world.”

'Effective and flexible way to find new donors'

In 2017 the charity said it was exploring other ways regular givers.

For the year to March 2019 the charity had a total income of £63m. Individual giving, comprising of regular and one-off donations, came to £6.8m.

However, this week it says door-to-door is one of the “most effective and flexible ways for us to find new donors as it allows us to have in depth conversations about how we do development differently and the incredible impact that work can have on the worlds’ most marginalised communities”.

The spokesperson added: “Our fundraising team has gone through a lot of change and faced a number of challenges (Covid-19 included) to getting the campaign up and running but we are so happy to be out speaking to the public, raising awareness for the amazing work that VSO does and giving people the opportunity to support people in some of the worlds’ poorest places through the pandemic and beyond.”
