Tesco has announced a five year charity partnership with Cancer Research UK, the British Heart Foundation and Diabetes UK.

Tesco said the partnership would focus less on fundraising than its previous partnerships, and would focus more on promoting the charitable objectives of the three organisations. But it said it still intended to raise “tens of millions” for the three charities.

The supermarket retailer said the campaign, called Little helps for healthier living, would focus on improving the health of Tesco shoppers and employees. It will develop a workplace health programme, use its communications campaigns to support health messages, and use its sales data to help develop health policy. It said it would target its activities to the needs of the three charities, as well as fundraising for them.

The move continues the supermarket’s association with BHF and Diabetes UK, which it has raised £25m for over the past three years. CRUK was not part of that partnership, but has previously worked with the retailer on its Race for Life event, as well as several other initiatives.

Dave Lewis, chief executive of Tesco, said: “I’m really excited by what we’re announcing today. This is a unique partnership, which will bring together the skills and expertise of the UK’s leading health charities and the UK’s leading food retailer to help tackle the biggest health challenges facing the nation.

“Together with the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, and Diabetes UK, we want to help people take small steps on their own terms to develop healthier habits. It’s about unlocking the energy, expertise and reach of our different organisations to develop little helps that make healthy differences across the whole country.”
