Bloodwise launches Waistcoat Wednesday campaign ahead of England semi-final

UK blood charity Bloodwise has launched a campaign in the run-up to tonight’s England and Croatia semi-final match in Moscow, where it is asking fans to wear a waistcoat and donate to blood cancer research.

The campaign, Wear a Waistcoat Wednesday, is inspired by England manager Gareth Southgate’s fashion choice, which has led to an increase in sales in waistcoats across the country.

Bloodwise is asking fans to wear a waistcoat today to show support for the national football team as they take on Croatia in the semi-final of the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia, and donate £5 to the charity.

Gemma Peters, chief executive of Bloodwise, said: “As the whole country is gripped by football fever, and with Gareth’s waistcoat-wearing having elevated him to the level of footballing fashionista, we thought that urging people to wear waistcoats on Wednesday would be a way of getting behind the boys at the same as raising money for a good cause. 

 “Every year around 40,000 people are diagnosed with blood cancer in the UK - the equivalent of half of the Luzhniki Stadium where the match will be played out –so it’s crucial we invest in more research to find better treatments and cures to save the lives of each and every person.

 “I’ll be wearing my waistcoat on Wednesday, so grab yours too and button up for blood cancer research with patriotic pride.”

The hashtag #waistcoatwednesday was trending on Twitter this morning, as was the incorrectly spelled hashtag #waistcoastwednesday.
