15 new entrants in this year's Charity 250 Index

02 May 2019 News

Heart of England Forest is the highest placed of 15 new entrants in this year’s haysmacintyre / Charity Finance 250 Index, entering in 76th place.

The charity’s income increased from £16.7m 2016 to £131.4m in 2018 due to a £123.1m legacy from its founder, Felix Dennis, who died in 2014.

The index, published by Charity Finance magazine, measures the largest 250 charities outside the top 100, ranked by income.

Another new entry to the index is Charities Trust, entering at 160th place with an income of £30.4m.

Lloyd’s Register Foundation has also re-entered the index at 127th place, with an income of £34.2m. The foundation previously joined the top 100 Index in April 2017 after its income was boosted by a £206m investment portfolio in 2013 by the Lloyds Register Group. It then left both indexes in 2014 until this year due to lower annual incomes.

The overall top entry in the index is Royal Voluntary Service, which has dropped out of the top 100 index. Last year it was at 93rd place. The second biggest in the 250 index is Motability, which has fallen from 47th place in the top 100 index. Shelter and ActionAid have also left the top 100 for the top 250.

Other changes include Sightsavers moving to the 100 index, with an income of £62.5m.

The minimum income requirements for entry in the Charity 250 Index rose by 8 per cent this year from £22.8m to £24.5m.
