Mike Nussbaum

Dr Mike Nussbaum has been involved in community development work for nearly 50 years. Since his retirement he has focused on promoting and developing the role of volunteering.

He was appointed chair of Expert Volunteer Initiatives which, set up by the Careers Development Group in January 2011 to help unemployed people back into work. He is also vice president of Volunteering England, where he was also founding chair from 1999 to 2009.

His work in the sector includes helping to create a unified single national voluntary organisation, establishing national quality standards for volunteer centres and volunteer management and successfully leading a campaign to persuade the government to integrate The Office of the Third Sector with the Cabinet Office.

In 2005 he received a national ‘Year of the Volunteer’ Award for services to volunteering, and in 2008 The Open University awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of over 40 years of public service.
