William Waldegrave

A former student at Eton, Lord William Waldegrave has been provost of the college since September 2008. After completing a degree at Corpus Christi College, Oxford University, Lord Waldegrave forged a career in academics, politics and business.

He served as MP for Bristol West between 1979 and 1997 and was as part of Margaret Thatcher’s and John Major’s government. Between 1990 and 1997 he also held the cabinet posts of Secretary of State for Health, Secretary of State for Agriculture, chancellor of the Dutchy of Lancaster and Chief Secretary to the Treasury for two years from 1995.

He founded the Mandela – Rhodes Foundation in South Africa, serving as trustee since 1992 and chairman since 2002. He is also chairman of the National Museum of Science and Industry.

He holds a number of non-executive company directorships and is a consultant to UBS Investment bank where he was vice chairman and managing director from 2003 to 2008.  He was also managing director of investment banking firm Dresdner Kleinwort from 1998 to 2003.

Lord Waldegrave is a Distinguished Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, an honorary fellow at Corpus Christi College, Oxford and a Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University.
