James Barrett is director of consultjbarrett.com - supporting leadership development, complex change and conflict resolution in civil society organisations. He is also a consultant with Cass Business School’s Centre for Charity Effectiveness.

He has worked with: the YMCA; Citizens Advice; Museums, Libraries & Archives London; The Royal Opera House; The Kings Fund; The School Teachers’ Review Body; Great Ormond St Children’s Hospital; The National Lottery Commission Board; Royal Holloway International; Islington Strategic Partnership; Hampshire Carers’ Strategic Partnership; and several schools and NHS Foundation Trusts.

James was on the NHS Leadership Centre’s small team of action-learning set facilitators for PCT executives, and has coached numerous civil society leaders.

He has facilitated consultancy skills courses for several universities; as well as conference presentations and workshops for YMCA, NCVO, Acevo, Mind, and the Sport & Recreation Alliance. His toolkit The CEO and Chair in Crisis – Positive Steps for Recovery was published by Acevo.  

Prior to becoming a consultant, James was CEO of the HIV Project - a second tier agency that had a profound influence on national strategy. Under his leadership this was the first NHS service to be transferred to charitable status.

He was chair of the National Association of HIV/AIDS Workers, and is currently a trustee of London Printworks Trust. James grew up in South Africa, where he served on the founding board of a groundbreaking human rights organisation.
