Society Diary: Hot weather, Love Island dads and lots of boxing

27 Jul 2018 Voices

Happy Friday dear readers! As an overly-warm person at the best of times, the UK’s sweltering heat has now forced Diary to sleep on the balcony, with a fan on, listening to relaxation tapes of Arctic winds.

Heat

The heat has clearly got to Prince Harry, who in a remarkable break from Royal protocol was seen snogging wife Meghan Markle at charity polo match in aid of children in Africa with HIV. According to radio station Heart, at one point Harry was even spotted cupping her lower back, while Meghan was caught “giving Harry’s back a loving stroke”. Raunchy stuff.

Meanwhile, in a desperate attempt to cool down, seven men in Essex seaside town Clacton-on-Sea will strip off to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. The Cheeky Chaps show will include 82-year old Bob Welton, who still goes to the gym every day.

In a different type of charity heat news, charities in Bath have raised £15,000 during the past year from metal taken from a local crematorium. Metal from steel hip joints, metal plates, wires, screws or rods - used during surgery for bone fractures to brain aneurysm clips – and small metal clips used to seal blood vessels in the brain were retrieved from the crematorium and recycled, with money raised going to the RUH Forever Friends Appeal, Cruse and The Make a Wish Foundation.

Boxing

If, like Diary, you’ve been looking for a distraction from the sun since the World Cup, you may be in luck. Eastenders actor Danny Dyer, the lesser known father of Love Island star Danni Dyer, and former crying England footballer Paul Gascoigne, who’s daughter Bianca Gascoigne apparently won Love Island (IN 2006!) might be having a fight for our entertainment.

Gazza announced on Twitter on Tuesday that he had started a 12-week training programme in preparation for a charity boxing match. He called for any celebrity opponents who wished to fight him to get in touch. Then, in a since deleted tweet, Gazza challenged Dyer to join him in the ring, calling him a “soft a***”, with his daughter’s Love Island beau Jack Fincham ringside. Dyer has yet to respond.

In other charity boxing news, Industry Boxing is organising an event for women boxers in Newcastle. It has urged women of all ages and abilities to sign up to its ten-week training programme, which will be followed by a fight night on 15 November. Contestants are urged to raise money for Against Breast Cancer, adding to the £17,000 raised by former contestants so far in 2018.
