Uber drivers to pick up donated items for Cancer Research UK shops

Ridesharing app Uber will be rolling out UberGiving in 10 cities across the UK this Saturday, picking up and taking donated clothes and other items to Cancer Research UK charity shops.

On Saturday 2 June, users of the Uber app who wish to donate “clothes, accessories and other items” to CRUK charity shops, will be able to hail a driver and have them deliver those goods.

UberGiving will be availble to users in central London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Merseyside, Bristol, Brighton, Cardiff, Glasgow and Edinburgh all day Saturday.

According to Uber, users can “gather up your donations, request a pick-up, and if there is a driver available in your area they will pick up your donations for Cancer Research UK’s shops”. Uber also said that user’s accounts won’t be charged for the service.

Uber said that CRUK shops were particularly looking for “menswear” but that “womenswear and children’s clothes are very much welcomed”, as well as shoes and accessories, homeware, small kitchenware and electricals – such as “small appliances, glassware, crockery” - and small electricals such as hairdryers and game consoles.

For users who have no items to donate, Uber will be encouraging people to donate £5 or £10 to CRUK by text.

Sophie Langman, head of corporate partnerships at Cancer Research UK, said: “We were really excited when Uber approached us about this collaboration. We’re always looking for new ways to make it easier for people to give to us and this innovative partnership will enable people to donate much-needed stock to our shops across the country, in a hassle-free way.

“As we don’t receive government funding for our research, this is a great initiative to help us raise more money to beat cancer. But it’s also a way for us to reach new people who might not have donated to Cancer Research UK before.”
