Matthew Hodson, executive director of NAM – a charity which provides information about HIV and Aids – won the overall award for the charity leader with the best social media presence at the Social CEO Awards last night.

The top 30 were selected from 101 nominations and there were also awards for best trustee, best leader, best rising star, best digital leader and best digital chief executive.

The awards are organised by Zoe Amar and Matt Collins, who both run digital marketing agencies that work with charities, and judged by a panel of experts in the sector chaired by Simon Blake, chief executive of the NUS.

Mandy Johnson, from Small Charities Coalition, Jane Ide from Navca, Matt Hyde from the Scout Association, Polly Neate from Shelter and Peter Wanless from NSPCC, were among the chief executives to make the top 30.

This year’s trustee award was won by Kirsty Marrins, who is on the board of the Small Charities Coalition.

Collins said the aim of the awards is to “shine a light on the people doing the best digital stuff in the charity sector”.

This year 14 of those that appear on the list are new entrants and 19 are women.

“This year was a breakthrough year for women,” Amar said.

Only two people have featured on the list every year since the awards started, which Amar said showed it is “harder and harder to maintain a place on the list”.

Hodson said he was “really proud” and that: “The reason I got involved in charity work in the first place was to give information out.”

He also referred to Public Health England’s announcement yesterday about reduction in new HIV diagnoses and the fact that people with HIV now have the same life expectancy as those without, meant that “so much good news to share at the moment” and he is “excited to be part of that”.
